New To Climate Controlled Storage? Consider These Helpful Tips

Placing your belongings in climate controlled storage involves much more than loading a truck and dollying boxes into a storage space. If you want to do it right and have the option to easily locate and/or move items at a later date, there are some steps you should take to help make your experience more productive.

Determine What Size Unit You Need

Before you rent storage, it is advisable to take inventory of everything you plan to place in climate controlled storage so you can make an accurate estimate as to which size storage space you need.  Don’t make the mistake of relying on a “mental” inventory.  This often results in forgetting or missing something. Once you have an outline of your inventory, you can use a size estimator to determine the exact indoor storage space you need to rent.

Securely Pack Your Belongings

Be sure to pack your belongings as securely as possible. You should use bubble wrap or packing paper, sturdy boxes, and quality packing tape.  If you plan to move furniture into your storage space, you can protect it by shrink wrapping legs and placing a sheet or blanket over it.

Organize Your Storage Unit

It is a good idea to come up with a system to organize your storge space.  This will make it easier to access items you may need at a later date.  Place items you know you will not need towards the back of the unit.

Tips for Storing Your Jet Ski

Tips for Storing Your Jet Ski

Part of the coastal South Carolina lifestyle includes lots of fun in the sun!  We often see a good number of jet skis in our Hanahan and Summerville vehicle storage facilities. If you want to preserve the integrity of your jet ski while it is in vehicle storage, there are a few steps you should consider taking.

Fill the Gas Tank and Use a Fuel Stabilizer

You should fill the gas tank before placing your jet ski in vehicle storage. This prevents moisture from developing inside your gas tank.  You should also consider using a fuel stabilizer if the watercraft is not going to be used in the near future and you expect it to remain parked for an extended period of time.

Disconnect or Remove Battery

If you do not use your jet ski on a regular basis, you can preserve the life of your battery by disconnecting or removing it.

Invest in a Quality Cover

When you put your jet ski in outdoor vehicle storage, it is a good idea to invest in a durable cover to keep it protected from continuous UV rays, dirt, debris, etc.

Readying Your RV for Storage

Readying Your RV for Storage

Readying Your RV for Storage

We are continuing or series on readying your RV for storage.  Our previous article discussed some tips to consider as you move your motorhome to RV storage. We covered some ways to prepare the inside of your RV, the fact that you should top off your gas tank, and also the importance of checking for leaks and covering holes.  Today, we will look at three more aspects to consider when placing your motorhome in a vehicle storage space.

Prepare the Exterior

Preparing the exterior of your motorhome before you place it in vehicle storage will help preserve the appearance and integrity of the RV.  Check to make sure all slides are functioning properly and pull them in.  Spray down and/or wash the RV. Consider waxing to protect the exterior from rust and UV light.

Use Chock Blocks

It is not a good idea to set the parking brake for a long period of time as this can cause damage to the brake pads. When parking your motorhome in RV storage, you should always use chock blocks behind the tires to keep the vehicle from moving.

Cover Tires

RV tires are very expensive. One of the best ways to protect them from UV damage is to purchase covers for them.  This is especially important if you plan to have your RV remain in vehicle storage for long periods of time.

Getting Your RV Ready for Storage

Getting Your RV Ready for Storage

Motorhomes have become a popular form of recreation over the past several years.  However, most homeowners associations do not allow RV storage and/or do not have a designated vehicle storage area for boats, RVs and other equipment.  If you find yourself having a difficult time locating a safe place for your motorhome, keep in mind that Climate Masters Indoor Storage has large, spacious vehicle storage/RV storage/auto storage at our Hanahan and Summerville locations.  If you plan to place your motorhome in RV storage, there are some preparation items to consider. Our next series of articles will cover tips on getting your RV ready for storage.

Prepare the Inside

Before placing your motorhome in a vehicle storage space, you should thoroughly clean the inside.  Be sure the refrigerator and freezer are empty and leave the doors open to avoid musty odors.  Check all drawers and cabinets.  Leave cabinet doors open.  Vacuum and/or sweep all floors.  Clean bathrooms and the kitchen.  Change linens. Close all blinds. Performing these tasks not only helps keep your RV in tip top shape, but ensures it is ready for your next trip.

Top Off Your Gas Tank

If you plan to move your motorhome to RV storage and have it sit for long periods of time, be sure to top off your gas tank to prevent condensation from forming in your fuel lines.

Check for Leaks and Cover Holes

Before leaving your unit in RV storage, do a quick check to make sure there are no leaks in the roof. Vents and exhaust pipes can be covered to prevent bugs and small animals from nesting.

Our next article will cover three more RV storage tips to consider.

Our previous article covered getting rid of items you no longer need and the importance of rotating and shifting items in your storage space.  Today, we will cover two more tips to consider when spring cleaning your indoor storage unit.

Update Your Inventory List

Since you will likely be purging some items and possibly bringing additional items to your storage space, it would be a good idea to review and update your inventory list.  Your inventory list should include all contents you are keeping in your indoor storage space as well as their location. This not only keeps you organized but helps ensure you can easily access something should you need it.

Assess Your Current Needs

You should assess your storage needs at least once a year. Should you downsize your storage space?  Do you need a larger indoor storage space?  Should you move a car, boat or motorhome that is sitting in your driveway to vehicle storage /RV storage? Now is the perfect time to review your storage space needs and adjust accordingly.

You should re-examine the inventory in your climate controlled storage space at least once a year and get rid of items you no longer need. You may be surprised at just how many belongings you are able to donate, sell or pass on to others.

Rotate Boxes and Shift Items

Boxes and other items may benefit from being shifted to a different level or spot in the storage space.  This is especially true of boxes that may be getting pushed in or creased due to pressure of items being stacked on top of them.

Our next article will cover two more storage space spring cleaning tips to consider.

Humidity and Heat Affect These Items

Humidity and Heat Affect These Items

Humidity and Heat Affect These Items

(part two)

There are certain items that should only be stored in climate controlled storage facilities.  We are continuing our series on items that are adversely affected by heat and humidity.  Our last article discussed paper, audio tapes, video tapes and electronics. This article covers three more categories of items that should not be kept in a storage space that is exposed to heat and humidity.

Some Metals

While most metals aren’t going to melt in the heat, humidity can wreak havoc and cause some types of metals to rust and/or turn color.  Jewelry, metal artwork and items with metal accents should be kept in a climate controlled storage space.

Wood

Wood is extremely susceptible to mildew when stored in a storage space with high humidity levels.  Wood can also expand, crack and warp as a result of heat and humidity, which is why it should always be kept in climate controlled storage.

Artwork and Collections

The heat and humidity of the Lowcountry can be quite damaging to various types of artwork and collections.  Indoor storage is recommended for these items as moisture and humidity can damage paintings, stamp collections, card collections, magazines, etc.  Some types of sculptures may even warp as temperatures fluctuate.

Items Affected by Humidity and Heat

Items Affected by Humidity and Heat

Items Affected by Humidity and Heat

(part one)

The Lowcountry is known for its hot and humid climate.  While this makes for great beach weather, heat and humidity do not pair well with some items.  Climate controlled storage is designed to protect your sensitive belongings from being damaged due to exposure to extreme heat and humid conditions.  Our next series of articles will highlight different categories of items that should be kept in a climate controlled storage space.

Paper

Heat and humidity will wreak havoc on paper, so keeping your photos, books, magazines, certificates, files, records, etc. in an indoor storage space is a must.  Not only does paper tend to turn yellow and become brittle in extreme temperatures and high humidity, but it is also very susceptible to mold and mildew.

Audio and Video Tapes

If you have any old cassette tapes, VHS tapes, etc. you will want to ensure they are placed in a climate controlled storage space. Heat and humidity can cause cases to warp while the tape itself can become brittle and damaged.

Electronics

Electronics such as computers, televisions, video games, etc. should not be subject to extreme heat or humidity.  Electronic components can easily melt in the heat of the Lowcountry summer while humidity and moisture can cause significant damage to sensitive parts. When storing electronics, always select a climate controlled storage option.

If you plan to rent storage now or in the future, Climate Masters Indoor Storage has affordable storage rates and convenient locations in Summerville, Hanahan, and Daniel Island.  Our Summerville and Hanahan storage facilities also have vehicle storage / RV storage / auto storage space as well. Tips for Storing Furniture

rent storage

We have many customers who rent storage for furniture.  Whether you have antique pieces or need an indoor storage space during an interim move, there is a proper way to prepare your furniture for climate controlled storage.  Let’s take a closer look:

Clean

First, be sure to thoroughly clean each piece of furniture you plan to place in indoor storage.  There should be no dust, debris, dirt or anything else on the surface.  Clean all wood with a recommended wood cleaner.  Be sure to polish any metal and wipe down all glass.  And, don’t forget to give fabric, cushions, and decorative pillows a little TLC as well.

Disassemble

Next, disassemble the furniture to make it easier to move and store.  Examples of furniture that people often take apart in preparation for climate controlled storage include bookcases, desks, tables, hutches and more.  Be sure to place any hardware (i.e. bolts, screws, etc.) in labeled plastic bags.  These can be stored with the furniture in your indoor storage space so they can be readily available when you need them.

Wrap

Wrapping your furniture provides an extra layer of protection, especially when transporting. Some people shrink wrap their furniture before placing it in climate controlled storage.  Others simply securely cover it with sheets or blankets.  Glass tabletops and other items should be wrapped in bubble wrap and securely placed in a box for extra protection.

When it comes to safe and secure storage facilities, Climate Masters Indoor Storage has you covered.  Our storage rates are affordable and we have numerous storage space options in Summerville, Hanahan and Daniel Island to meet your needs.  Our Hanahan and Summerville locations also have auto storage/vehicle storage/RV storage available as well.  If you are seeking to rent storage, look no further.  We invite you to stop by for a tour of our storage facilities today!

Climate Controlled Storage

Advantages of Climate Controlled Storage

Climate Controlled Storage

If you are looking to rent storage and are exploring the pros and cons of indoor and outdoor storage facilities, then this article will provide you with some important aspects to consider.  Let’s take a look at some of the advantages climate controlled storage has over traditional outdoor storage space options.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature, especially extreme cold or heat, can wreak havoc on the contents in outdoor storage facilities.  Humidity is also a problem when storing belongings in an outside storage space.  Items especially susceptible to temperatures and humidity include objects and furniture made of wood, electronics, paper such as documents, books, magazines, playing cards, etc., mattresses, artwork, photos and more.  When you store items in a climate controlled storage space, you have peace of mind knowing they are protected from extreme temperatures and humidity.

Better Sealed

Indoor storage spaces are designed to be maintained at a certain temperature, therefore, they are sealed and insulated much better than outdoor storage facilities. An indoor storage space has improved air quality and less dust and debris when compared to outdoor store facilities.

While storage rates for climate controlled storage are higher than outdoor storage facilities, if protecting your belongings is important to you then paying a little more is well worth the investment. Climate Masters Indoor Storage is the premier provider of climate controlled storage solutions with locations in Summerville, Daniel Island and Hanahan.  Additionally, if you need to rent storage for vehicles or equipment, we have extra long auto storage/vehicle storage/RV storage spaces available at our Hanahan and Summerville locations.  Give us a call or stop by to tour our storage facilities today!
