Items Affected by Humidity and Heat

(part one)

The Lowcountry is known for its hot and humid climate.  While this makes for great beach weather, heat and humidity do not pair well with some items.  Climate controlled storage is designed to protect your sensitive belongings from being damaged due to exposure to extreme heat and humid conditions.  Our next series of articles will highlight different categories of items that should be kept in a climate controlled storage space.

Paper

Heat and humidity will wreak havoc on paper, so keeping your photos, books, magazines, certificates, files, records, etc. in an indoor storage space is a must.  Not only does paper tend to turn yellow and become brittle in extreme temperatures and high humidity, but it is also very susceptible to mold and mildew.

Audio and Video Tapes

If you have any old cassette tapes, VHS tapes, etc. you will want to ensure they are placed in a climate controlled storage space. Heat and humidity can cause cases to warp while the tape itself can become brittle and damaged.

Electronics

Electronics such as computers, televisions, video games, etc. should not be subject to extreme heat or humidity.  Electronic components can easily melt in the heat of the Lowcountry summer while humidity and moisture can cause significant damage to sensitive parts. When storing electronics, always select a climate controlled storage option.
