Organizing Your Storage Unit

Our last article discussed ways you can maximize space in self-storage units.  This article will focus on how to best organize your storage space.  The better organized the storage space, the less time it will take for you to locate something you need within your unit. It is also important to note that if you also need car storage, RV storage, boat storage, etc. it is most beneficial to rent your auto storage space at the same facility as your climate controlled storage unit.

Let’s take a look at some strategies to help you organize your storage space:

Label all contents

It is important to properly label all of the contents in your storage space.  This sounds obvious, but it is one step that many people fail to do. While you may remember what is in a box now, you could forget as time goes on, making it more challenging to locate items down the road.  It is also helpful to number your boxes to make the contents easier to identify.

Stack boxes in order of need

Think about what boxes you will need to access on a regular basis.  These boxes should be stacked toward the front of your storage space so they are easy to get to when you need them.

Make a list of all your contents

Making a list of all of your contents and the general vicinity they are located within your storage space will make them easier to access. We discussed numbering your boxes. Your list should include each box number and its contents.
