Failing to Label Boxes

When you place your belongings into your climate controlled storage space it may seem like you will be able to easily remember what is in all of the boxes. However, as time passes, you would be surprised at how easy it is to forget. Take Photos and Videos

Taking photos and videos of the contents of your indoor storage space is an excellent way to document exactly what you have in storage, how it is packed, and how much space you have left for additional items should you need it down the road. Photos can also be used to accompany items listed on your master inventory sheet. Videos are a great way to quickly locate items housed in your climate controlled storage space.

Create a Visual

Some people like to create a visual such as a map or diagram of what they have in their climate controlled storage space and how it is placed. This helps them quickly locate particular items they need to access. You may think that you will remember what you have and where everything is located when you first move items into your climate controlled storage space. The truth is, over time, most of us forget. Out of sight is out of mind. That is, until we realize there is something we need then we head over to the storage facilities where we rent storage only to open our indoor storage space and look at the contents with a blank stare. Wondering where you put something after the fact is very common. The good news is that there are some proactive steps you can take to help ensure you remember and can easily locate items in your climate controlled storage space.  Let’s take a look:

Mark Boxes

It is a good practice to clearly mark your boxes with what is inside of them before placing them in your climate controlled storage space. Try to write legibly and list the main items inside each box so you will be able to easily locate them when needed. Some people color code boxes with labels, colored markers, and even colored packing tape (i.e. green for kitchen items, blue for electronics, red for photo albums, etc.) When stacking boxes in your indoor storage space, be sure that the label/content markings are facing outward and can be seen.

Make An Inventory Sheet

An inventory sheet can be a life saver when it comes to locating a particular item inside of a packed climate controlled storage space. You can do this using a spreadsheet or even some colored pens and paper.  Be sure to list each item and box, as well as contents and corresponding color code.

We are continuing our series discussing some of the types of items that should not be stored in public storage facilities. Our previous article covered hazardous chemicals (i.e. paint thinner, chlorine, bleach, acid, fertilizer, turpentine, etc.), flammable materials (i.e. fireworks, acetone, propane, gasoline, kerosene, etc.) and guns, weapons and ammunition.  Today, we will look at more categories of items you should not place in your climate controlled storage space.

Anything Living

It’s obvious that any person living in a climate controlled storage space is prohibited. Keeping live animals, even those in aquariums, is also not allowed. Storing plants and flowers is also not permitted because they can bring in pests, fungus, and other problems that can spread to nearby units.

Tires

Tires, both used and new, should not be stored in a public climate controlled storage space. They are flammable and present a fire hazard.  Also, if the person that rented the unit abandons the storage space, the storage facility would be faced with significant disposal fees.

Cash

It is not advisable to store large amounts of cash in your indoor storage space. A safety deposit box actually provides more protection for cash. While a climate controlled storage space is safe, there is always a chance that something unforeseen could happen such as a fire or flood that could compromise or destroy the cash you have stored.
